Prepare for National Mammography Day

Breast Cancer Awareness National Mammography Day

Breast cancer attacks the tissue in one or both of your breasts. It develops when cells stop working correctly, creating abnormal cells that grow uncontrollably.

On National Mammography Day, we’re here to remind you that regular breast/chest exams and mammograms are crucial care. While monthly self-exams and practicing breast self-awareness are important, in-person health center exams are necessary for experienced providers to know if your breasts have any concerns.

Things to look out for

The most common breast cancer symptom is a lump in your breast or in your armpit. Other things besides cancer can cause lumps, so finding one doesn’t definitely mean you have cancer. Also, lots of people have breasts that are just normally lumpy. But it’s important to get checked out if you find a lump.

Signs of a potential breast problem:

  • Swelling in the breast
  • Dimples in the skin of the breast

  • Pain in your breast or nipple

  • Nipples that turn inward instead of sticking out

  • Skin on your breast or nipple that’s discolored, flaky, scaly, or thicker than normal

  • Discharge or blood coming out of your nipple

Screening Mammograms

A screening mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that helps detect breast cancer early. It can find lumps that are too small to be felt during a clinical breast exam.

Most people with breasts should get screening mammograms every 1-2 years starting at age 40, but you may need to get one before then if your family has a history of breast cancer or if you have cysts in your breasts (which can hide the symptoms of breast cancer).

The earlier breast cancer is found, the easier it is to treat, because it is usually smaller and less likely to spread. This month and every month, remember to practice breast self-awareness so you can alert your provider of any changes or concerns. You can also make a health center appointment to get a screening mammogram through the Planned Parenthood Direct app.
