UTIs vs Yeast Infections: What's the Difference?

Most of us look forward to the sizzling summer heat for the slew of fun festivities the season brings. Unfortunately, hot, humid weather, UTIs, and yeast infections go hand in hand.
But with similar symptoms, how can you tell the difference between the two types of infections? We’ve got you covered. Check out the main standouts between yeast infections and UTIs so you know how to best protect yourself from discomfort this summer!
UTI
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of the urinary system, including your bladder and urethra. UTIs happen when certain bacteria get into your urethra and cause an infection. Anyone can get a UTI, but they’re more common if you have a vulva. Treatment for UTIs is generally antibiotics, which get rid of the infection. The most common symptoms of a UTI include:
-
Pain/burning when urinating
-
Frequent/urgent need to pee
-
Cloudy or bloody urine
Yeast Infection
A vaginal yeast infection happens when the healthy yeast that normally lives in your vagina grows out of control. Yeast infections can usually be cured easily with anti-fungal medicine or with a single pill that you swallow (called Diflucan or Fluconazole). While creams and suppositories are over the counter, you’ll need a prescription to get the yeast infection pill, so contact your nearest Planned Parenthood health center if you have any of these symptoms:
-
Thick, white discharge
-
Itchy and uncomfortable
-
Abnormal odor, irritation, bleeding or pain
